Game Development Resource Lists on GitHub: Scope, Activity and Sampled Link Health

Evidence note: Repository descriptions below come from each project’s own GitHub page; independent corroboration of those descriptions remains open. The measurement discussion draws separately on PlayAgit’s recorded September 10, 2026 observations. Those observations establish results within their stated scope, not independent verification of resource quality. PlayAgit Test contains the detailed measurement records.

Resource Lists by Focus: AI Tools, Godot, Haxe, Multiplayer, Game Boy and SCP Plugins

The specialist collections describe different development contexts. Their stated focus gives readers a way to narrow a search before inspecting individual resources.

These are scope descriptions. For a particular project, the practical next step is to inspect a linked resource’s documentation for the relevant engine, language, platform or plugin environment. Inclusion in a collection does not establish compatibility with a particular project.

General Collections: Magic Tools, Kavex, felladrin, Fribb and davidgmbb

ellisonleao/magictools identifies its game development resource list as Magic Tools, while Kavex/GameDev-Resources describes itself as a list of game development resources.

felladrin/game-development-resources-list calls its collection “everchanging.” That is the project’s description, rather than a measured update schedule. Fribb/game-development-resources describes its repository as a transfer of David Arcila’s game development resource collection on ZEEF. davidgmbb/engine-resources states that its purpose is collecting game development resources.

A useful browsing approach is to begin with a concrete task—finding an engine, learning a technique or locating an asset tool—and inspect the relevant entries. Readers seeking additional collection context can consult PlayAgit’s overview of GitHub game development resource lists.

September 10, 2026 Snapshot: Comparing the Evidence

The recorded comparison covers Magic Tools, Kavex/GameDev-Resources and killop/anything_about_game. PlayAgit Test supplies their dated inventories, activity observations, repository metadata and sampled link outcomes.

Each measurement answers a different question. README inventories describe document structure and URL volume. Default-branch activity describes recorded changes during a defined window. Repository metadata describes account and repository state. Link checks describe the responses received for selected destinations.

These dimensions should remain separate: the evidence does not establish a single overall ordering of the repositories.

README Inventories: Unique URLs, Headings and Exact Duplicates

In PlayAgit’s own September 10, 2026 pinned-README inventories, Magic Tools contained 427 unique URLs across 428 extracted URL occurrences, Kavex contained 356 across 356 occurrences, and killop contained 5,604 across 5,695 occurrences. These are README extraction results; the detailed records appear in PlayAgit Test.

A unique URL is not necessarily a distinct development resource. Navigation and badge destinations can enter the inventory. Removing fragments also means links to different sections of the same page can collapse into a shared destination.

The heading metric counts eligible Markdown headings outside fenced code. It describes document organization, without establishing that headings represent equivalent subject categories across repositories. Exact normalized duplicates likewise identify repeated addresses, without determining whether repetition serves a useful navigational purpose. PlayAgit Test provides the heading and duplicate counts.

Default-Branch Activity over the Previous Year

PlayAgit’s recorded activity method counts default-branch commits during the preceding calendar year, including all authors and bots. The repository-specific totals and latest-commit observations belong in PlayAgit Test.

Commit frequency alone does not reveal the substance of an update. A formatting change and a substantive resource revision can both contribute to activity. Assessing editorial maintenance would require examining what changed and whether reported problems received effective responses; those outcomes are not established by the supplied activity measurements.

Repository Metadata: Stars, Contributors, Issues and Archive Status

The metadata fields require different interpretations. A star count records GitHub stars. Archive status records whether the repository was marked archived at the observation point. Neither field measures whether a linked tutorial or tool meets a developer’s needs.

PlayAgit’s contributor method excludes anonymous contributors and accounts identified as bots. Its totals describe returned API accounts, rather than a complete census of human contributors. The supplied method also notes that GitHub contributor data is cached and that email-to-account linking is limited.

Open-issue counts exclude pull requests. A count alone does not establish response time, resolution quality or the absence of unreported problems. PlayAgit Test contains the recorded metadata values.

Implementation Note

PlayAgit’s own September 10, 2026 link checks used 30 URLs per repository, selected from the beginning of each sorted unique-URL inventory. In those samples, Magic Tools returned 1 dead and 3 unknown results, Kavex 1 dead and 4 unknown, and killop 2 dead and 7 unknown, as recorded in PlayAgit Test.

The useful distinction is between a conclusive failure and an unresolved response. Under the recorded method, HTTP 404 and 410 responses counted as dead, successful HTTP responses counted as reachable, and other outcomes remained unknown. An unknown result therefore cannot be silently treated as either working or broken.

The recorded dead-link rate excludes unknown outcomes from its denominator. Readers should inspect the accompanying sample counts in PlayAgit Test before interpreting that rate.

Measurement Limits: README Scope, Sorted Samples and Untested Usability

The inventory covers README content, rather than every file in each repository. The activity measurement covers the default branch, rather than all branches. The link sample is deterministic and nonrandom: sorting can place related domains together, so its outcomes do not establish a repository-wide failure rate.

Reachability also answers a narrower question than usefulness. A responding page can still require further inspection for relevance, documentation, licensing or compatibility. Those properties were not tested here.

Beginner usability and resource quality remain open. For practical use, the collections provide places to discover candidates; evaluating a candidate still requires reading its own documentation and trying it against a defined development task.

GitHub REST public unauthenticated GET; default-branch commits over previous 12 calendar months (all authors, bots included); open issues exclude PRs; contributors exclude API Bot/[bot] accounts, anonymous omitted; GitHub contributor data is cached and only the first 500 author email addresses are linked to users. Counts describe returned API accounts, not all human contributors. README only: ATX level 2-6 headings outside fenced code; HTTP(S) URLs, fragments removed, exact normalized duplicates. Link sample is first N sorted unique URLs; 404/410 dead, 2xx reachable; redirects followed at most 5 hops; other results unknown. Dead-link rate denominator includes only conclusive sampled URLs. No usability, resource quality, full-tree, or all-branch test.

Best-for-beginners: deferred; no beginner task or usability trial was run.
Best-maintained: deferred as an overall recommendation; commit age/activity and open issue counts do not measure response time or resolution quality.
Most-comprehensive by README unique-URL count only: killop/anything_about_game (5604 URLs), among these 3 selected repositories. URLs include navigation/badges; this does not establish useful-resource coverage or quality, and is not a whole-repository comparison.
